Surfaces and matter

In paper, cardboard, wood and concrete, Alex Bloc proposes series of work that oppose fragility and resistance. Here, the main tool is the machine. The introduction of chance into the automated process (through the choice of supportsand the adjustment of the machines) creates works in which fragility and resistance confront one another. For the artist, it is an adaptation of the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, wabi being the simplicity of things in their natural state, and sabi, the patina of objects and the trace of human intervention. Works on vibration, accumulation, the repetition of lines, wefts or patterns, the outline or alteration of matter on the support define its depth. Automation gives rise to the unpredictable, the line vibrates, and the vector becomes texture. Emptiness is transformed into light; the square becomes a cube, the pixel, a poetic shape.
