From his beginnings twenty years ago, LX One, whose real name is Alex Bloc (born in Strasbourg in 1979), has patiently followed a path leading him to different materials and techniques. His prolific body of work is the result, and his fascination for geometrical patterns is obvious. This practice is part and parcel of a trend that is a century old, be it optical art of course, but also, on a larger scale, Constructivism, Minimalism, the De Stjil movement or even Neoplasticism or Brutalism. The grid, the oblique, and the diagonal perpetuate this creation of space-time painting, dear to the master of the De Stjil movement, Theo Van Doesburg, whose design of the Aubette in Strasbourg (1928) Alex Bloc has admired. Later, when Alex Bloc discovered Vasarely, François Morellet, Daniel Buren, Georges Rousse, and the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi, he changed tack and rapidly migrated to the graffiti scene, in which he was active at the beginning of the century, and then to concentrating on canvas works and art gallery installations, all the while continuing his work in pre-existing places.
Integrating digital tools into his research and exploration of shapes and their rendering, he shapes materials, metal, wood, paper, cloth, acrylic, aerosol, ink, sand, and concrete, and uses and associates each material as a new source of inspiration, struggling against or accommodating its constraints. Reworking the elements produced by hand, re-cutting and reassembling them, he shapes a millimetered concept into a juxtaposition of trials and attempts, until he ob- tains the idea he has been pursuing, the recurring one of having a third dimension emerge from a plane surface, either by creating a very concrete bas-relief, or through optical illusion.
For his in situ works, in the places that existed before he intervened, Alex Bloc respects the basic rules of the installation, be they ephemeral or not, taking into consideration the immediate environment, space, and the history of the place in order to create a dialog between the context, the work itself (as Daniel Buren would say), and the spectator, he who looks at the new ensemble. Playing with perspectives, vanishing lines, visual codes and perception becomes the ultimate means of organizing a sort of visual poetry that is abstract and purely graphic. Beyond the signature, his is a gesture that multiples, and integrates searching and chance into his work to create a piece that is unique and recognizable among all others.
The influences of nature, with her changing and ungraspable beauty, counterbalance the technological character of his creative process. Using his rectilinear shapes that are always modified by the irregularity of a material, either through its resistance to the production process, or the simple trembling of his hand, Alex Bloc offers apparent but fragile order to the incredible diversity of lights on the ocean, mountains, or even buildings that some would deem derisory and without interest.
